My grandmother’s friend Eileen was a magnificent person. She was an artist with an eye for all things beautiful. I met Eileen when I was about 12-years-old and needed someone to think I was great. Eileen wrote me beautiful notes on handmade cards and shared her paints and brushes with me. She was my grandmother’s dear friend and my idol at the time.
I still remember the call. Eileen was visiting family up north when she called my grandmother with some tough news. Eileen had just been diagnosed with Leukemia and wasn’t going to get better. She passed away a few months later, leaving her husband and beautiful art behind in an empty house.
I met Arnie Goodman last year through work. My boss had assigned me to do the marketing for his first annual paddle race, Sweetwater Paddle for the Cure. Three years prior Arnie had been diagnosed with multiple myeloma, an incurable but treatable cancer of the plasma cells.
Even while fighting his own cancer, Arnie, a busy doctor, set out to put on a big race to bring awareness to and raise money for multiple myeloma. He turned his struggle into help. The event raised over $35,000 for cancer research. I was inspired.
I’m lucky nobody in my close family has had to fight cancer, but it’s impossible to say I haven’t been touched by it. Cancer takes too many lives, and that is why I am running the 2010 Disney Princess Half Marathon with Team in Training. I will train with a team, commit to raising at least $2,100 and run for a cure!
Will you support me and this cause?
You can contribute to my efforts with Team in Training at any time here. Your donations will go far!
BAKE SALE!!!
I am also excited to announce that healthy ashley will host a vegan and gluten-free bake sale to raise money for Team in Training!! All items will be vegan and many gluten-free, so this is a great way to expand your baking skills and enjoy some sweet vegan/GF treats! All funds will go directly to my fundraising page for Team in Training and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society.
I need bakers! Have a favorite vegan/GF recipe you’d like to contribute? Or maybe you’re up for a challenge to make a old family recipe vegan and/or gluten-free? Or you’re better outside the kitchen and have a fabulous local bakery with goods worthy enough to ship across the country? Then please sign up to send a scrumptious treat to the supporter with the highest bid. Email me at healthyashley at gmail dot com and I’ll add you to the list!

How has cancer affected your life? Will you participate in this bake sale?

Count me in! My grandfather had skin cancer towards the end of his life, and my great aunt was almost killed by lung cancer and has a lot of lasting medical issues from that.
I did TNT and it was an amazing experience. I loved my coach, the people and the cause. I am going into Child Life and want to work in Oncology so I will have this all hit home soon enough.
This is such a great cause! I will try to master a recipe for it!
I can't bake but I would loveee to buy :)!
I'm in! My father died from melanoma.
Unfortunately, cancer has affected my life. My father has bladder cancer. My mother's best friend (who was like a second mother to me growing up) died of colon cancer 9 years ago.
I'm not much of a baker, but I will donate some money to your fundraising page.
as someone who is directly effected by cancer I would love to help. My mother is battling colon cancer right now. I am going to try out some recipes this weekend!
Ashley, I blogstalk you (can't even figure out where I found you) and love your blog. Your running actually inspired me and I just signed up for a half-iron triathlon in June - through team in training! (Seriously JUST signed up tonight!) I had no idea you're running through them - awesome!! Thanks for inspiring! Good luck on the journey!
OH, and I'm vegan too so I love that you are now too! :)
Ashley, I feel like I haven't been by to "see" you in awhile so I just wanted to say HI!! : )
My father-in-law currently has cancer and I never realized how much it can truly affect people's lives until now.
I'm not the best baker when it comes to gluten free (I've had some epic fails), but I am handy with a credit card!

i've had a lot of cancer in the friends and family. most recently, my close friend's husband's leukemia came back. this is his second battle. his 12-yr old son lives with them, and they have a 2 yr old son already, and she's pregnant again. So i can't imagine being pregnant, caring for 2 kids, working, and having to deal with his cancer returning.
also just yesterday I got the call that my brother (lives in charleston) found some melanoma on some moles he had removed. so that's scary too. i've got to hit the dermatologist tomorrow for a mole check myself. Sunscreen! use it.
Great post! I've been thinking about doing Team In Training, it's a wonderful cause.
Ashley,
I am a 17 time Team in Traning participant.
Thanks you so much for taking a stand against cancer.
I am honored to be one of your team mates in this fight.
GO TEAM!!!
Cancer has affected my loved ones way too many times, most recently my cousin's amazing wife being diagnosed with breast cancer. I can't bake worth a dime, but I will do anything else I can to help. Plus I love Team in Training!
